Mike Moore welcomes Bush administration support for new round

WTO Director-General, Mike Moore, today, welcomed the support shown by senior Bush Administration officials for the launch of a new round of trade negotiations this year. In 4 days of meetings, Mr. Moore met with US Trade Representative, Ambassador Robert Zoellick, Commerce Secretary, Donald Evans, Agriculture Secretary, Ann Veneman, National Security Council Advisor Condoleezza Rice, National Economic Council Advisor, Lawrence Lindsey, as well as various business groups and labour officials

“Ambassador Zoellick and I have had very good meetings this week in which we covered the full range of issues that face us. During my visit to Washington, I have been impressed by the seriousness and commitment of Ambassador Zoellick and indeed of the entire Bush Administration. I am also impressed by the determination of President Bush and Ambassador Zoellick to work closely with the Congress to gain trade promotion authority as soon as possible. This is very important not just for the United States but for all US trading partners.

“I very much appreciate the support the Administration has shown for the launch of a round this year. But I also appreciate the importance President Bush and his team attach to the Free Trade Agreement of the Americas. I believe the Administration can pursue both initiatives at the same time. Ambassador Zoellick knows from past experience how to negotiate a round and an important regional agreement. This Administration is committed to work for open markets bilaterally, regionally and globally. My job is to ensure that work advances in Geneva so we can all enjoy the benefits of global trade liberalization. This is best done by the launch of a new round”.
