Any explanation
of the WTO must begin with its predecessor-the GATT. And that is where this presentation
begins, with the world trade environment of the immediate post-war years that prompted
governments to establish the rules of fair play for international commerce and begin
opening new markets to competition. The video illustrates, through
film cuts, news clips, graphics and interviews how the world of trade has grown and
changed over the past 50 years and the key role the GATT and, more recently, the WTO have
played in bringing those changes about.
Interviews
with world business leaders point out how companies are thriving in a world of increasing
opportunities thanks to more open markets and a climate that favours investment and job
creation, not only in the area of merchandise goods but also in trade in services and
intellectual property.
Finally, the
video presents, in graphic form, the organization of the WTO...how its various committees
and institutions work...how more than 120 governments worldwide participate in its daily
activities to ensure a secure and stable environment for world trade.
This
presentation is accompanied by a 35-page booklet that looks a little more in depth at the
WTO and its various rules and components. This "kit"- the video and the booklet-
provides the means to a basic understanding of this organization and its role-past,
present and future.
The video and
booklet are available in English, French and Spanish and in Pal, Secam or NTSC format.
