The overall objective of the course is to widen participants'
understanding of trade policy matters, the multilateral trading system,
international trade law and the functioning of the WTO. It is expected that
the knowledge acquired during this course will allow participants to
contribute to the promotion of a more active participation of their
countries in the work of the WTO. Throughout the three-month training,
officials will become acquainted, through lectures, debates, attendance at
WTO meetings and simulation exercises, with virtually all the issues dealt
with in the framework of the WTO. Visits to other international
organizations located in Geneva will also allow them to become more familiar
with trade-related aspects of the work conducted by these organizations.
Participants were encouraged to actively take part in the forthcoming
training and to develop and strengthen a solid network of contacts by
attending WTO meetings and discussing with delegates, WTO experts, and
representatives of other organizations. The 27 English-speaking participants
come from developing and least-developed countries and economies in
transition. All sessions of the course will be held in English.
The 38th Trade Policy Course is the fourth of its kind in the 2006
Geneva-based WTO training season. An Introduction Course for LDCs, a Dispute
Settlement Course and a Specialized Course on Sanitary and Phytosanitary
Measures will complete the Geneva-based programme for this year. Five
similar Trade Policy Courses, organized in cooperation with regional
academic partners, will also have taken place in different regions of the
world by the end of this year. Other shorter courses and a large number of
national and regional technical cooperation activities regularly take place
in the field as part of the WTO Technical Cooperation and Training Plan.
