The 25th thematic course on WTO Dispute
Settlement, which took place at the WTO headquarters in Geneva, was
organized by the WTO Institute for Training and Technical Cooperation (ITTC)
in collaboration with the Legal Affairs Division and the Secretariat of
the Appellate Body. The course, which was held in English, represents a
“level 2” training activity within the Progressive Learning Strategy of
the WTO's Technical Assistance and Training Programme.
The course was opened on Monday 30 August 2010
by Mr. Serafino Marchese, Chief of the Training and Capacity Building
Section, ITTC, and was closed on Friday 3 September 2010 by Mrs Valerie
Hughes, Director of the Legal Affairs Division and Mr. Hakim Ben Hammouda,
ITTC Director.
During the week, participants received
presentations on the importance, as well as the working, of the WTO
dispute settlement system. They were then taken through the various
stages of the WTO dispute settlement process by means of interactive
presentations, question and answer sessions, as well as practical group
exercises. They were also updated on the current negotiations on the
Dispute Settlement Understanding. In addition to the participants
attending the 31 August regular meeting of the WTO Dispute Settlement
Body, a representative from the Advisory Centre on WTO Law provided them
with an overview of the Centre's work and the assistance it provides to
WTO developing and least-developed country members.
Additionally, participants benefited from the
perspective of a number of WTO Geneva-based delegates as well as lawyers
from private law firm on some of the advantages and challenges of the WTO
Dispute Settlement System.
This course was held pursuant to the WTO's biannual technical assistance
and training plan and in line with the mandate contained in Article 27.3
of the Dispute Settlement Understanding to better inform Members of the
dispute settlement procedures and practices.
