Introduction Course for Least-developed Countries: 30 January — 17 February 2012
The three-week Introduction Course for Least-developed Countries (LDCs) was opened on 30 January 2012 by Ambassador Van Schreven of the Netherlands. The course, which was attended by 23 participants from least developed countries (LDCs), of which ten were from countries in the process of accession to the WTO, was held in English at the WTO headquarters as part of the Institute for Training and Technical Co-operation’s 2012 training programme. The course represents a level 1 activity of the WTO’s 3-level progressive learning strategy.
Through presentations and exercises, participants were familiarised with the functions and structure of the WTO, as well as its basic rules and disciplines. They were also briefed on the overall WTO work programme, including on the state of play of a number of areas in the Doha Development Agenda (DDA) negotiations. The development dimension constituted an important element of the programme, which focused on the negotiating priorities of LDCs.
The course was enriched by the involvement of a number of speakers from the Geneva trade community, including delegates and representatives from the International Trade Centre (ITC), the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD), the World Bank and the Advisory Centre on WTO Law (ACWL). The participants also benefited from the presence of Ambassador Van Schreven in a session dedicated to the technical assistance provided by the Government of the Netherlands to the LDCs. The participation of these speakers contributed towards strengthening their understanding of, and encouraging the establishment of contacts with, other international organizations in Geneva.
Participants also attended the General Council Meeting held on 14 February and benefited from an interactive session with Deputy Director-General Valentine Rugwabiza.
