The European Union and the WTO

This page gathers key information on the European Union’s participation in the WTO. The European Union (until 30 November 2009 known officially in the WTO as the European Communities for legal reasons) (more info) has been a WTO member since 1 January 1995. The 27 member States of the EU are also WTO members in their own right. The EU is a single customs union with a single trade policy and tariff. The European Commission — the EU’s executive arm — speaks for all EU member States at almost all WTO meetings.

Goods schedules and tariff data  back to top

  • Get tariff data — includes explanations of bound and applied rates, the HS system and related jargon
  • The EC goods schedules apply to its member states but there are schedules under their own names for the countries who joined in 1995 (Austria, Finland, Sweden) and for the 10 countries who joined in May, 2004. (see list in right column).

Services schedules and MFN exemptions back to top

  • The EC services schedules include its member States but those who joined in 1995 (Austria, Finland, Sweden) and in May, 2004 (list in right column) also have schedules under their own names.
